ENTER WHIZBANG®! The Computer Font for Comic Book Lettering! There are both Type 1 and TrueType versions of WhizBang on this diskette, for use with Microsoft Windows. AFM and other files are included which will allow these fonts to be used in some applications outside of Windows. All files other than the TrueType fonts are in the MISCFRMT subdirectory. Before installing, delete any old versions of the font. TRUETYPE INSTALLATION: Activate the Windows font utility in the Windows Control Panel by simply clicking on the "Fonts" folder. Click on "Install" in the File menu, then browse for the WhizBang font files and click on the "OK" button. You can also just copy the font files from the diskette to the open Fonts folder. Then close the Fonts folder/application and you are ready to go! TYPE 1 INSTALLATION: Activate the Adobe Type Manager control panel application and click on "ADD" to browse for the WhizBang Type 1 font files in the MISCFRMT directory within the Whizbang directory. Click on "ADD" again to install them. Close the application and you're ready to go! Older versions of ATM will require you to restart Windows. RECOMMENDATIONS: This font is best used in a page layout program. We highly recommend using Windows and something like PageMaker, Freehand, CorelDraw, or Adobe InDesign. We also recommend using anti-aliasing (font smoothing). Anti-aliasing can also be achieved with imaging apps such as Photoshop, or other image processing utilities. For the latter, create your text at a size larger than the final version and scale down. If the utility handles anti-aliasing, it will smooth the text. This is the best way to present WhizBang online. Photoshop will do the anti-aliasing as you type! Make sure to set the kerning option (if available) to be active at the smallest point sizes possible. For the best comicbook-looking results, use all capital letters and keep the leading (line spacing) tight. Center all the lines within your words balloons. To get the character for first person pronoun "I", enter alt-0240. To get the left and right "burst" characters, enter alt-0178 and alt-0179. Use bold italic for stressing words (which breaks the dialog up in a nice way if used sparingly and tastefully. This font is designed for the creation of comics. It does not contain some symbols like Sigma, LogicalNot or other mathematical characters that get mapped to most text fonts. In their places you'll find squiggles and smileys or other funny book glyphs. Here's a handy chart of all the characters. Highlight and format in WhizBang. If you ever get lost, just copy from here and paste into your dialog. ------------------------------- ! Metafile format files tend to display on screen under MS Windows more accurately than EPS. Try them out to see if they can be of help in setting up your story. They are not infinitely malleable, but can at least help you get started. Some of the files have individual parts of balloons that allow some customizable combinations (with perhaps a little touching up). EPS files are usually positioned in your document using your application's "import" or "place" command. Page layout programs are the most appropriate tools for using these balloons. (Not all programs support the EPS format. Check with your application's documentation to see if they can work for you.) They can be enlarged, stretched, squashed, or shrunk as any other graphic objects imported into documents. Within the page layout program, position your comics text over the balloon, breaking lines to fit as needed. Centering each of the lines of text within the space of the balloon usually works best (and can usually be done with a simple formatting command). THE LEGAL BIT: This software is licensed only to one individual user per purchased copy, who may legally copy it without restriction and convert it to other formats if necessary, but solely for their own use. This is a fairly broad license, because we realize individual users may want to use their fonts on different systems, but it does not allow for multiple simultaneous users. If you want to be rid of it, you can sell the original disk to someone else. But if you keep a copy for your own use as well, you're pirating it.
