ENTER WHIZBANG! The Computer Font for Comic Book Lettering! INSTALLATION WhizBang ships with both TrueType and Type 1 versions of the font. To install the TrueType version, move the WhizBang suitcase file in the TrueTyp folder to any one of the following directories: ~/Library/Fonts /Library/Fonts /System/Library/Fonts To install the Type 1 versions, move all the files in the Type 1 folder except the two AFM files into your system folder. The AFM files are provided for any application that may require them, but they are not necessary for most installations. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR USING THE FONT: This font is best used in a page layout program. We suggest using something like Adobe InDesign or Quark Xpress, and drawing or image applications like Illustrator or Photoshop. We also recommend using anti-aliasing (font smoothing). For the best comicbook-looking results, use all capital letters and keep the leading (line spacing) tight. Center all the lines within your words balloons. Use bold italic for stressing words (which breaks the dialog up in a nice way if used sparingly and tastefully. Make sure to set the kerning option (if available) to be active at the smallest point sizes possible. To get the character for first person pronoun "I", enter option+shift+b. To get smart quotes, use option+[ and option+shift+[, and option+shift+] for smart apostrophe. Left and right "burst" characters are option+shift+5 and option+shift+6. The following table shows all the characters in a font. With WhizBang installed, highlight them all and change the font to WhizBang to see everything in it. You can keep this file handy to copy and paste the characters you want, or use the Character Palette (part of the international settings) to find the keystrokes that make them. ------------------------------- ! Instead, we include some squiggles and smileys and such, typical of comics. EXTRAS The Balloons folder contains EPS files for different kinds of word balloons. Try them out to see if they can be of help in setting up your story. They are not infinitely malleable, but can at least help you get started. Some of the files have individual parts of balloons that allow some customizable combinations (with perhaps a little touching up). EPS files are usually positioned in your document using your application's "import" or "place" command. Page layout programs are the most appropriate tools for using these balloons. (Not all programs support the EPS format. Check with your application's documentation to see if they can work for you.) They can be enlarged, stretched, squashed, or shrunk as any other graphic objects imported into documents. Within the page layout program, you would then position your comics text over the balloon, breaking lines to fit as needed. Centering each of the lines of text within the space of the balloon usually works best (and can usually be done with a simple formatting command). THE LEGAL BIT This software is licensed only to one individual user per purchased copy, who may legally copy it without restriction and convert it to other formats if necessary, but solely for their own use. This is a fairly broad license, because we realize individual users may want to use their fonts on different systems, but it does not allow for multiple simultaneous users. If your site requires multiple copies, please inquire about our quantity discounts. By the terms of this license it's illegal to give copies of this software away, or to sell copies of it. If you want to be rid of it, you can sell the original disk to someone else. But if you keep a copy for your own use as well, you're pirating it. By purchasing this font, you are licensed to use it in it's printed form in any way you see fit. There are no restrictions on printed reproduction and publishing, and you are not required to provide credit to Studio Daedalus, though feel free to do so! But enough palaver!
